How a refurbished computer campaign uncovered customer demand for credit, and why the next step was to rethink lead generation.
A successful marketing campaign doesn’t always end with a sale. Sometimes, it reveals an opportunity the business hadn’t considered.
We recently ran a lead generation campaign for a refurbished laptops and PCs business. The objective was straightforward: connect the business with people looking to buy computers.
The campaign generated leads at R4.80 per lead.
But the most valuable result wasn’t the cost of acquiring those leads. It was what those potential customers told us.
The market wanted more than a computer
When we looked at the enquiries coming through, one finding stood out: 80% of the leads wanted to purchase on credit.
The campaign had revealed something important. The business wasn’t simply competing on computer specifications and prices. For a significant portion of its prospective customers, how they could pay was just as important as what they could buy.
That insight prompted the business to expand its offering to include credit options.
This is where marketing becomes more than promotion.
Instead of relying on assumptions about what customers wanted, the business had real responses from its target market to inform a commercial decision.
The campaign didn’t just help the business find potential customers. It helped uncover a barrier that could have been preventing those customers from buying.
From generating leads to understanding buying intent
The next question was: how could we help the sales team identify which enquiries deserved attention first?
Not every lead is equally ready to buy.
Some customers know exactly which computer they want and are ready to proceed. Others are still comparing options. Some are interested but need a payment solution that fits their circumstances.
Sending every enquiry through the same sales process makes it harder to prioritise follow-ups and understand where opportunities are being lost.
So we began developing a more intelligent approach to lead qualification.
Building a smarter lead qualification system
Our next step was to develop a structured form that captures more than a person’s name and phone number.
The aim is to understand the buyer’s needs, purchase readiness, preferred device and intended payment route before the sales team gets involved.
Using a lead-scoring matrix, enquiries can then be grouped according to their sales readiness and routed to an appropriate follow-up process.
For example:
-
High-intent enquiries: Prioritise prompt personal follow-up, relevant product information and a clear next step towards purchase.
-
Credit-option enquiries: Direct interested customers towards the appropriate financing information and application process.
-
Early-stage enquiries: Provide useful product information and follow up when the customer is ready.
The purpose isn’t to dismiss people who aren’t ready to buy. It’s to give each enquiry the right response while helping the sales team focus its time where it can make the greatest difference.
Importantly, a marketing lead score measures sales readiness; it is not a credit approval or an assessment of someone’s creditworthiness. Any financing decision must follow the relevant provider’s responsible lending and affordability processes.
What this means for businesses investing in marketing
This project illustrates an important principle: your marketing can reveal opportunities that your business strategy hasn’t yet accounted for.
A campaign can tell you which products attract attention, what customers are asking for, which objections keep appearing and what prevents people from completing a purchase.
Those insights can inform more than your next advertisement. They can influence your product offering, payment options, sales process and customer experience.
And when lead generation is connected to lead qualification, the business can begin building a clearer picture of the journey from initial interest to a potential sale.
That’s a more useful outcome than measuring success by lead volume alone.
This is what business evolution looks like
At Dreamscene, our Evolution Framework™ is built around the understanding that businesses need different solutions at different stages of growth.
Sometimes the priority is establishing a credible brand. Sometimes it’s building a digital presence or generating demand. And sometimes, as this project demonstrates, it’s using what the market tells you to improve how the business converts opportunities into customers.
We don’t believe marketing should operate in isolation from the business it serves.
The real opportunity isn’t just to generate more leads. It’s to learn from them, respond to the market and build a smarter path to growth.
Businesses don’t grow by accident. They evolve, if you are looking for a partner to help your business evolve, reach out to us at info@dreamscene.co.za and let’s start the conversation.
